Gastrointestinal Health

Acupuncture is extremely powerful in the treatment of G.I. disorders

Acupuncture is extremely powerful in the treatment of G.I. disorders and its effect is wide and varied- from intestinal motility to stomach pain; from healthy gut bacteria regulation to bloating; from ulcers to gas, to name a few.

Acupuncture treats so many gastrointestinal disorders effectively by working on the somatic autonomic reflexes that control the organs and tissues of digestion and elimination, and by reducing gut inflammation. Somatosensory stimulation (the messages the needles induce to the diseased G.I. tissues) and muscular visceral reflexes in the spine (the nerves that control the G..I organs) are the way acupuncture makes an impact in such a safe and effective way.

When the acupuncture needle is locally inserted beside nerves that go into the intestines and stomach there is somatosensory stimulation to that nerve pathway which travels up the spinal cord all the way up to the medulla (of the brain), where the electrical impulse jumps straight up to the primary somatosensory cortex of the brain. This in turn stimulates the thalamus and hypothalamus (particularly the paraventricular nucleus) which releases oxytocin (aids greatly with proper digestion), the periaqueductal gray which releases opioids (for pain relief), and the brain stem which regulates autonomic nerves (for poor movement of the intestines). Acupuncture addresses gastrointestinal inflammation, blockages, and swelling by releasing anti-inflammatory cytokines, white blood cells, prostaglandin, and serotonin (which are naturally made by our bodies when healthy).

What this all means is that [electro] acupuncture is given around the area where the nerves directly travel into the body to affect the alimentary canal- the mouth, the throat, the stomach, the colon, and the intestines, to effectively treat a long list of GI disorders.

Acupuncture shows the greatest improvement in cases where there are G.I. problems compounded with mental emotional stress. This is because acupuncture works on physical problems while simultaneously regulating the HPA axis and cortisol levels (which are negatively impacted by excess stress). This is also seen in its ability to treat issues of the stomach like ulcers and gastritis. So if you’re experiencing diarrhea or constipation accompanied by pain and stress, acupuncture treats all of these simultaneously without any use of drugs. The effects are powerful, natural, and long lasting because they work on the actual root of the disease!
